Stories from women who have had pre-menstrual-syndrome

"PAULINE'S STORY"Pauline experienced extreme violent and aggressive feelings pre-menstrually. She actually used to strike her husband and her daughter. She relates her experiences here very frankly.Pauline is a 35 year-old mother and housewife who has had pre-menstrual-syndrome since she was 13 years-old.'I used to be able to cope when I was in my teens but as I became older, my symptoms became really dreadful. I used to feel groggy for the whole week before my period. I had terrible migraine headaches and my head felt like it was full of cotton wool. Towards the end I'd have to spend the last few days in bed as I had no energy. I also had severe insomnia, dizziness and forgetfulness.Eventually I started hitting my one year-old daughter. I knew it was wrong but I couldn't control myself. I even hit my husband. I tried to carry on with life pre-menstrually but the very thought of going out of the house sent me into fits of the shakes. I was very frightened of meeting people. In fact, I was terrified! I was given so many treatments for pre-menstrual-syndrome. First my doctor prescribed different types of pill. Then I had valium and I wasn't sleeping. That's when the depression started. Then I had anti-depressants. I felt like a junkie with my "uppers and downers". Hormone treatment made me feel worse, and so finally I was referred to a psychologist who prescribed narcosis (ie being sedated and put to sleep) which lasted three days. This failed to help, and so the psychologist suggested giving me a course of ECT. I was very frightened, really desperate. I felt as though I was cracking-up. It wasn't any wonder that my marriage split-up. I even attempted suicide. I just felt like I wanted to shut the door and be on my own, and yet I didn't want to be on my own, it was most peculiar.

HORMONE TREATMENTAfter my overdose my doctor decided to try me on a hormone treatment. Shortly after I started hormones, then I developed very severe breast tenderness. My breasts literally stood out and they were so sore and uncomfortable. I kept taking them for two months but the problem just intensified. I ended up taking pain-killers every day to try to ease the pain.I decided to stop taking the hormone treatment but that was easier said than done. I had awful withdrawal symptoms even though I came off them gradually. First I took two per day, then one, then every other day. The symptoms were so awful and, oh my head, I've never known anything like it. I couldn't bear to put a foot down in front of me. The food cravings I had were unbelievable. I vowed I would never take another tablet for the rest of my life.

RELIEF AT LASTI read about a Nutritional Supplement in the local newspaper. I was at my wits end at the time and the thought of spending another weekend in bed with terrible sweats and shakes. I felt like it was the last resort before I accepted the ECT. Fortunately, it managed to sort me out in the first five days, it was unbelievable!.

Pauline suffered very severely with pre-menstrual-syndrome, to the point where she was at times a danger to herself and certainly a liability to her family. Her whole life revolved around her pre-menstrual symptoms. She was, sadly, unable to lead a normal life and on the point of having psychiatric treatment, ECT, when she found help. It was soon discovered that her symptoms were due to her nutritional state. She admits herself that she responded exceedingly quickly to a change in her diet and a nutritional supplement of vitamins and minerals.

END RESULTI don't have any symptoms anymore. My life has changed dramatically. I feel much more at ease, and I never shout unless I am angry. My agoraphobia has gone completely. I can go out with confidence and I feel great in myself. I can do all the things I couldn't do before. I can go anywhere.

"RUTH'S STORY"Ruth was another victim of violent and aggressive feelings which she acted on pre-menstrually. Ruth is a 39 year-old housewife and mother of two children. Her pre-menstrual symptoms began after the birth of her first baby, although she feels it may have been simmering beforehand.'Pre-menstrual-syndrome totally changed my character when I had it, and I had it for half my life. It began two weeks before my period, sometimes more. It would disappear on the first day of my period and I immediately felt a sense of relief. Than a week after my period it began to build up again.I became very irritable, very tired, snappy and aggressive, which is not a bit what I'm like normally. I would shout at my husband, literally scream at him. I used to go to my room and have a screaming fit to keep it to myself. But people would aggravate me easily. Obviously when you have small children they tend to get on your nerves when you are tired. I felt like a lump of lead at the time and I know I had very little patience with my older daughter who was my only child when it was at its worst. She suffered. I'm sure. I would scream at her and hit her at times which was very upsetting for me afterwards because I know a child of seven couldn't possible understand.

I VOWED IT WOULDN'T HAPPEN NEXT MONTHAlthough my husband was understanding and sympathetic, it's very difficult to have a normal relationship with someone when they are not well and aggressive. There is no doubt about the fact that the presence of pre-menstrual symptoms placed a strain on our marriage.Very often I'd take it out on the children instead of my husband. This was because I knew he had such high standards of self-discipline and I think he felt that I ought to have been able to do something about my own behaviour. I'd always vowed that next month I was jolly well going to, it was mind over matter etc. but it never seemed to work.

I HATED MYSELFWhen pre-menstrual I felt I was awful, I really hated myself. When I started hitting my daughter. I felt like I had really failed myself. I felt like a worm. Really dreadful. I cannot explain how I felt. I tried to explain to my doctor but he didn't understand.

MY DAUGHTER LOCKED HERSELF AWAY FROM MEI think my daughter was quite frightened of me actually. I am normally placid but of course I wasn't, as my symptoms were occurring more often than not when I was at my worst. I would sometimes grip her and shake her, poor girl.I never did her any bad damage, but it was awful to me as I would never normally strike a child.

PREVIOUS TREATMENTSThe first time I went to the doctor about my pre-menstrual-syndrome, and I have been to several doctors about it over the years, it was thought a good idea for me to take the Pill to remove the "tension" beforehand. This was after the birth of my first child, about 14 years ago. The Pill caused me awful headaches and I had to come off it.I realised I couldn't continue to suffer, by which time my original doctor had left the practice. The new doctor prescribed vitamin B6. He wanted to try the natural approach first before prescribing progesterone. Although I thought that the vitamin B6 was helping at first, it didn't make the slightest difference to my symptoms.I then read that evening primrose oil might help, so I bought some. I have still got the remains of the bottle. Unfortunately, it didn't help at all.I saw a specialist who examined me thoroughly and could find nothing physically wrong. He said it was a hormonal imbalance and prescribed hormone treatment. They did help my symptoms a bit until pre-menstrual-syndrome reared it ugly head again. My husband then read an article in the newspaper about a nutritional supplement which was helping with pre-menstrual-syndrome and suggested I follow that up.

Ruth struggled for 14 years with her symptoms. Again, it affected a large portion of her life. She admits her family suffered a great deal because of her behaviour pre-menstrually. And she was unable to control herself. She suffered severely with three categories of pre-menstrual-syndrome. A. The nervous and uptight symptoms, C. craving for sweet foods etc. and D. particularly depression, confusion and forgetfulness. She had tried many treatments before to help ease her symptoms, but she was unable to control the situation. Long-term hormone treatment did help ease things a bit, but she unhappy taking them.

END RESULT'Since taking the nutritional supplement to overcome my pre-menstrual-syndrome. I can honestly say my symptoms have disappeared. I think they have really vanished, like absolute magic. I am overwhelmed by it. My life is now back to normal. There is no comparison in me now. I am a completely different woman. Back to what I was before.
