Pre-menstrual-syndrome causes Agoraphobia

"JANE'S STORY" - Jane was a 36 year-old mother of three children who was trying to work part-time and for six years she had been severely agoraphobic pre-menstrually.

It was six years ago that I went to my front door and discovered I couldn't walk through it. I was pre-menstrual at the time, and had noticed symptoms had begun after my sterilization.

I couldn't go out alone, not to the shops or to the bingo, which I had always taken in my stride. I really thought I was suffering from a very serious illness. I saw my doctor and he diagnosed nervous tension. I didn't believe him though, because I'm not the nervous type.

My doctor prescribed Valium, but it was no help. In fact it made me feel worse because it gave me panic attacks. I was on Valium for six months and then had great difficulty stopping. I went back to the doctor when I was pre-menstrual and just threw the tablets at him. I told him to never, ever prescribe me any kind of tablets like that again, as they made me feel so ill.

Previously, I would have been described by my family and friends as practical, hard-working and always full of fun and laughter. I was frightened and bewildered by the changes in myself. I found myself losing new friends as they grew tired of hearing my constant tales of woe.

I was at the doctor's every other week with my list of symptoms. He referred me to a psychiatrist at one point who insisted I was as strong as a horse and that the condition was all in my mind. I was gaining four to five pounds (2-3kg) in weight pre-menstrually, suffering with severe breast soreness, pounding headaches, edginess and irritability and then the agoraphobia would start. I was sure it wasn't all in my mind.

After recovering from the effects of the Valium I had been taking, we decided to move so that I could be near my supportive family. My new doctor suggested hormone therapy as he said it was usually prescribed for women who were going through the menopause early, but I was only 36 years old! When I read contraindications of the hormones I decided that as an overweight, over 35 smoker I should not be on these hormones.

I had now reached an impasse. My doctor had given his advice and I had refused to take it. Coincidentally, a few days later I read an article about nutritional supplements and pre-menstrual-syndrome. When I read the article I couldn't believe it. Here was someone describing me and my symptoms, saying that these nutritional supplements had helped other people in similar situations.

I WAS LIKE AN OLD WOMEN AT 36 - I was suffering three out of every four weeks. I felt very uptight and niggly all the time. Plus I felt really frustrated and frightened that I couldn't get to the bottom of the problem.

The only way I could get out during the day was on the arm of an elderly neighbour in her seventies, who walks with the aid of a walking stick. There was I, half her age, clinging to her. Talk about the blind leading the blind! We'd even have to stop off on the way at my friend's shop because I was shaking so much.

I tried to forget it, but life was far from normal. I began to wonder if I would ever feel right again.

MY MISERABLE FAMILY - I was sheer hell to live with. For five years I had lived a life of misery and so had my family. My husband was very good, considering what I put him through. I used to deliberately row with him pre-menstrually and pick holes in things. I was very agitated and always looking for an argument. He would avoid me at this time of my cycle. Sexual relations were a real problem in view of how I felt pre-menstrually, plus the fact that I was so tired, I just wasn't up to it.

My husband had to take me everywhere. I was utterly dependent on him. You can't have a normal relationship under these circumstances. But at least I am lucky that he was so supportive.

Jane's problem areas were pre-menstrual-syndrome A, H and C as well as her agoraphobia. She was literally a shadow of her former self.

END RESULT - All Jane's long standing severe symptoms either cleared up completely or became very mild and 'livable' with after using nutritional supplements.
