THE BODY - One thing we have in common is that we all have a body! Our bodies are nothing more nor less than a highly complicated biochemical machine, the function of which, like any engine, is dependent upon the quality of it food or fuel supply.

The Body is composed of many different organs and tissues which have important and essential functions and interactions. For example, if you want to move your arm, a tiny electrical message passes from the brain, through the nervous system and down the nerves to the muscles in your arm, which then contact. The degree of stretch or tension in a muscle is relayed, via other nerves, back to the brain, so that the muscle does not over, or under stretch in performing the movement that you originally intended.

There are factors that affect the healthy function of nerves, muscles and all other parts of the body.

Firstly you need to inherit a good and healthy metabolism. Almost everyone has healthy genes, and thus the possibility for their body to be completely healthy and function efficiently. However, there may be subtle individual variations in metabolism, which determine the strengths and weaknesses of one's physical constitution. This may explain why some people are sensitive to some types of dietary change or nutritional deficiencies, and others are not - why some women may develop pre-menstrual-syndrome, and others, despite eating an 'unhealthy' diet, may not.

Secondly some disease states can lead to the development of pre-menstrual-syndrome.

Finally, and most importantly, there must be a healthy diet, giving an adequate supply of those nutrients necessary for the normal functioning of each individual cell. A lack of any one nutrient leads to changes in the cell's metabolism, which in turn will result in changes in the individual's health.

As a general rule vitamin and mineral deficiencies are caused by a poor diet or the presence in the diet of agents such as alcohol, tea, coffee, cigarettes, poor quality food, or an excessive consumption of carbohydrates. These increase the need for nutrients from the remaining healthy foods that are consumed.
