The Story of Minerals
THE STORY OF MINERALS Despite all early references to the use of minerals, many centuries passed before researchers could clarify the role that minerals play in the body. In the early 20th century, as vitamins were being isolated and their importance was beginning to be identified, many minerals were also shown to be essential to human nutrition. Minerals, sometimes referred to as inorganic elements, make up about four percent of the body's weight - or the equivalent of about five pounds of body weight. About 50 different minerals have been found in the body, and of these, it's estimated that about 17 are actually essential, while the others are there as accidental contaminants. WHAT ARE MINERALSMinerals are different from the vitamins because minerals are not organic substances made by plants or animals. They're actually inorganic elements found in the soil. Minerals are grouped into two categories depending upon the amount normally found in the body. Among those minerals determined to be essential to the life functions of humans are iron, iodine, zinc, fluoride, copper, chromium, manganese, selenium, molybdenum and cobalt. WHAT MINERALS DOMinerals function as structural components of living tissue and as regulators of many important processes that occur in the body. They're found in every cell and are involved in some way or other with almost everything the body does. In their structural role, minerals contribute strength and firmness to bones and teeth. They're also part of essential body compounds. For example, iron is a part of hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying substance in blood), as well as a number of different enzymes, iodine is part of the thyroid hormone, and cobalt is a part of vitamin B12. Minerals such as iron, zinc and copper are also part of the structures of enzymes. If sufficient amounts of these minerals are not available, not enough of the enzymes are made.
