Pre-menstrual-syndrome and weight gain
"REBECCA'S STORY" - Rebecca is a 38 year-old divorcee with two children who works as a teacher. 'Looking back, I think my symptoms began increasing in severity after the birth of my children. Certainly, the last ten years have been the worst. I suffered for years before I even knew what I was suffering from. I'd never heard of pre-menstrual-syndrome - my doctor was unsympathetic, and so I thought it was just part of my make-up and therefore something I had to suffer. My husband was very unsympathetic towards me during my pre-menstrual times. He couldn't believe I could be all right one minute and then suddenly have symptoms which involved him making adjustments. He really doubted that my symptoms actually existed. It caused a lot of misunderstandings and arguments. For example, I remember a time when I asked him to turn the record player down as it was giving me a headache, and he just grudgingly said "Well, you were quite all right this morning". I just used to feel depressed, isolated and confused because I didn't really know why I was feeling so different pre-menstrually. My symptoms would occur ten to 12 days pre-menstrually. The most physically noticeable thing was that I'd gain four to five pounds (2-3kg) in weight, my abdomen felt really bloated. I'd get craving for food, in fact I just couldn't seem to get satisfied no matter what I ate. Apart from that I'd feel very irritable, exhausted and fairly afraid of my dizziness and fainting attacks, particularly when I went shopping or stood up for any length of time. I looked terrible pre-menstrually, which didn't help. I had puffy eyes surrounded by dark shadows. Another thing was that I used to always feel cold. and inner cold. I would have to go to bed and crawl under the dooner with a hot water-bottle, but still wouldn't be able to overcome the cold, my teeth would still be chattering. Life was really very difficult at the time and the stress of a broken marriage made things even worse. I found it difficult to work pre-menstrually as I couldn't concentrate. My head was so fuzzy and I couldn't formulate my ideas properly. I had previously tried several different treatments for pre-menstrual-syndrome, none of which were of any lasting value. I tried taking vitamin B6 on its own, but it didn't work. I also had some acupuncture and visited a medical herbalist. I put myself onto a course of Efamol evening primrose oil, but found that this only helped initially. SCATTERBRAIN! - I was so forgetful. One day I put my handbag on the roof of the car whilst I loaded it and then drove off without moving it. I can honestly say I felt terrible pre-menstrually. I didn't like myself at all. WRECKED MARRIAGE - My marriage broke down. I know that my pre-menstrual-syndrome symptoms aggravated the situation. They caused a lot of misunderstandings. We had awful rows. He simply didn't believe my symptoms existed. I think he thought I'd made them up to suit myself and to inconvenience him. He had no understanding of the situation and I felt so isolated in it. I got very confused and tense as a result which aggravated my behaviour, so it was a vicious circle. When I heard about the nutritional approach to pre-menstrual-syndrome, I decided to give it a go. I discovered I had an added complication of severe food allergies which I have also been working on, and a thyroid problem which is now being treated. My symptoms are down to a bearable two days per month now and I hope that I will be able to overcome them completely as time goes on.
