Why is Pre-Menstrual-Syndrome more common today?

In reality, it is not just pre-menstrual-syndrome which seems to be affecting more women nowadays, but a whole range of medical conditions. In all cases the conditions are nutrition related.

In Great Brittan it is thought that more than 150,000 people die every year from heart attacks and strokes. 35 million Americans now suffer with high blood pressure, which is no doubt a contributory factor to the one and a half million heart attacks and strokes that occur each year.

'Mental' illness is on the increase, hyperactivity in children is not uncommon, and allergies such as eczema, asthma and hay fever are increasingly common. As we age, those of us who don't get cancer seem to get arthritis or diabetes. It appears that we are being crippled slowly and subtly. It is prevention, rather than new treatments that are now needed.

By now you must be wondering why the diseases are becoming more common, and you might well ask. Our bodies were not built to cope with refined or processed foods, very often empty of nutrients. We have had to live with pesticides and insecticides being sprayed on our crops, growth hormones and antibiotics pumped into animals, and environmental pollution and acid rain as the finishing touches. Many of us overeat and under exercise, and women these days tend to lead far more stressful existences. So it is logical, really, that we can't honestly expect our 'machines' to go on indefinitely without breaking down when we don't treat them with respect. We generally treat our cars better than we do our bodies - you wouldn't dream of putting the wrong fuel in your petrol tank, would you?

A GOOD LOOK AT OUR DIET

* We have increased our consumption of sugar* Our diet is particularly high in saturated fats (animal fats)* We eat far too much salt 10-20 times more than our bodies re- quire per day* We drink far too much coffee and tea which block the absorp- tion of essential nutrients* We consume volumes of foods with a high level of phosphours, which impedes absorption of good nutrients* Many of the foods available contain chemical additives in the form of flavour enhances, colouring and preservative* Our water contains certain pollutants* Our meat has become contaminated with high growth hormones and antibiotics* Nitrate fertilizers have been used to obtain fast-growing and abundant crops* Almost all of our fresh fruit, cereals and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides at least once

SMOKING -Smoking tobacco has become a widespread habit among Western Societies. Far too many women still smoke.

ALCOHOL -Since 1961 consumption has increased by 80 per cent, even regular social drinkers are at risk.

DRUGS - Western Societies have become drug-orientated.

THE PILL - The birth control pill can cause vitamin and mineral imbalances and deficiencies in the body.

VITAMIN AND MINERAL INTAKE HAS FALLEN - The intake of certain vitamins and minerals have fallen well below the recommended daily allowances. Some 15 vitamins, 24 minerals and 8-10 amino acids have been isolated as being essential for normal body function. They are synergistic, which means they rely on each other in order to keep the body functioning at optimum level. Imaging the body as a highly-skilled computer, which only performs well when it has the correct input. In this case, instead of data, the body needs certain nutrients. When one or more is in short supply, symptoms occur and the body becomes inefficient and breaks down.

OTHER BARRIERS -Not only are we taking in insufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals, but the absorption of many of these nutrients is impaired by factors like alcohol, junk food, pollution and pesticides.

TIMES DO CHANGE -Is it any wonder women suffer with pre-menstrual-syndrome? 100 years ago, meat, animal fat and sugar were a much smaller part of our diets than today. The consumption of cereal fibres has also dropped by as much as 90 per cent. These are important factors in relation to pre-menstrual-syndrome.
