What is Hormonal Nutrition?

NUTRITION NEEDSI feel confident in stating boldly that hormonal health requires regular supplies of more than 60 chemicals that your body cannot make in sufficient amounts, or cannot make at all. You have to get them from your nutrition.

You cannot miss out even one of them, because all nutrients work in synergy with each other in the trillions, yes trillions of complex chemical reactions that go in your body every second of your life. It is the multiple interactions of nutrients, not their single actions, which form the basis of all biological functions.

L-ARGININE FOR HORMONESIn women, nitric oxide levels depend on complex interactions between L-arginine and oestrogen. Supplementary L-arginine in multi-gram amounts, taken last thing at night increases growth hormone release. It also prevents inhibitory effects on the hormone cascade of the stress hormone cortisol.

GET YOUR POTASSIUMPotassium is an essential nutrient for both your brain and your hormone cascade, because it is the main cation (positively charged electrolyte) in your cells. It interacts with sodium and chloride to conduct all your nerve impulses. With insufficient potassium available, everything slows down.

Humans get insufficient potassium and too much sodium, especially on the typical highly processed diet. Fresh, unprocessed food contains much more potassium than sodium. Even seafood from a sodium-rich environment has more potassium.

ZINC YOUR HORMONESZinc forms part of many enzymes in your body, involved in thousands of different functions from cell growth to testosterone production. Your body pool of zinc is small and easily compromised.

Zinc deficiency is so widespread that some researchers suggest it is one cause of the astronomical rise in male impotence and female frigidity in America. Zinc supplementation promptly restored the hormone.

CHROMIUM YOUR HORMONESChromium used to be abundant in our food, but it is easily destroyed by processing. From sugar cane to white sugar for example, over 90% of chromium disappears. Because of modern food processing and storage, chromium is now scarcer than hens' teeth.

Considerable evidence indicates that the upper limit of the recommended chromium allowance is too low to maintain hormonal health. Numerous studies show that this form of chromium if safe and effective in maintaining insulin metabolism, and thereby can help maintain the balance of your whole hormone cascade.

BORON IS ESSENTIALStudies show that boron supplements produce some of the beneficial changes of oestrogen replacement therapy, and also enhance effects of oestrogen, with no toxicity and no side-effects.

LIPOIC ACID FOR NERVESYour brain is particularly vulnerable to free radical damage because of its high oxygen consumption. To maintain your hormone cascade you should do everything possible to protect it.

We became interested in lipoic acid, (also called thiotic acid), in the '70s, when European physicians began using it to treat the nerve degeneration of diabetes. It has particular actions in preventing what is called glycation damage.

VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTSVitamin supplements are available in many varieties, such as liquids, tablets, or time-release capsules. Different forms can be natural or synthetic, chewable or nonchewable, regular or fruit-flavoured. They may contain only one vitamin or multiple vitamins and even nonvitamin substances. Dosages may vary widely from one supplement to another, from relatively low to extremely high (mega-dose) quantities.

Confusion and misinformation surround the use of supplements. People hear stories that our food supply is being robbed of its nutritional value and that it's difficult to get the required vitamins through our daily diets alone.

Even with all our knowledge of vitamins, the notion that vitamins are endowed with miraculous powers still persist. This idea, combined with a misunderstanding about how vitamins work, leads many to believe that daily vitamin supplements are essential for good health.

A dietary lack of a vitamin produces a continuum of effects. As body tissues lose their vitamin reserves, metabolic reactions that require the vitamin are adversely affected, and symptoms begin to appear.

WHO NEEDS VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS?Actual vitamin deficiencies due to a faulty diet or as the result of some disease condition should be treated with appropriate vitamin supplements. Some people think that as long as they take vitamin supplements, they don't need to worry about how or what they eat. This is not so. To ensure good nutrition and good health, all essential nutrients, not just vitamins, must be supplied in adequate amounts. Nutrients are all part of a team, and vitamins are just some of the players.

MEGAVITAMIN THERAPYWe've all heard claims for megavitamin therapy. "You should take extra B vitamins when your body is under stress," or "You can eliminate the symptoms of menopause by taking lots of vitamin E."

Today people are bombarded with claims for miracle cures by "megavitamin" therapy promoters who say that vitamin supplements are effective in treating many physical and mental disorders.
